You can also find Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips products at other restaurant chains, including Nathan's Famous. Today, only seven Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips restaurants remain: Three in the metro New York City area and four in northeast Ohio, where the chain was created. (In an interesting twist of fast-food fate, Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, actually helped get Arthur Treacher's up and running in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, before launching his own hamburger juggernaut out of the same city.) By the end of that decade, Arthur Treacher's had filed for bankruptcy protection.

The cod Arthur Treacher's used in its recipes doubled in price as a result of the 1975-1976 Cod War between Iceland and Britain. Temple City, CA Fish and Chips Restaurants Guide. The downfall of Arthur Treacher's began in the 1970s, when fast-food chains, new and old, were duking it out.

The founders acquired the recipe from Malin's of London, which originated the idea of serving customers on-the-go with deep-fried fish and chips, soaking in malt vinegar, in the 1860s. Not much in the shopping center to see (auto parts shop, value supermarket, etc.) but worth it for take out.Arthur Treacher's recipe – and menu – was simple: Focus on the British staple of fried fish with a side of fries ("chips" to the Brits), and serve it up in large quantities. Mostly made for take out but has a few tables. Great place for lent… and is usually busy during this time. Coleslaw isn’t spectacular but still good and freshly made. For some reason their fish makes up for the soggy fries. Fries are usually soggy and a little oily but still good with their tarter or cocktail sauce. There is something about H’Salt’s batter that is extra crispy on the fish that makes them nice. Get some extra tarter, a bottle of malt vinegar and some extra cocktail sauce and your ready to pic nic. I hope that the frying oil isn’t still original though… Actually their fish is great and still a bargain with their fried shrimp and hush puppies. Everything still remains original in this H. But most of the time they fry up your fish to order. And the counter… still the original heat lamps, etc. only orders for chicken strips and zucchini are served with. You have to love the little asian ladies owners who work the counter. orders come with pre-packed tarter sauce, malt vinegar, ketchup, hot sauce and cocktail sauce. I think it is one of the last standing H Salt Fish & Chips in the area. I give this H Salt five stars for still being around.

I think eating here should be OK as long as you don’t overdo it. Luckily, it hasn’t occurred the last few times I’ve eaten there. 3) On more than one occasion in the past, I’ve gotten a bad greasy feeling in the pit of my stomach after eating there (surprise, surprise … right?). (Luckily, it’s not a big issue, since I usually just get my food to go.) 2) Customer seating is very limited and pretty spartan - there’s a total of maybe 3 tables and 6 chairs inside. Some notes: 1) They have no restroom for customers. Keep an eye out for the daily specials posted on the whiteboard at the front door.

Parking is a non-issue, the strip mall parking lot there always has plenty of free space. Seriously, grease seems to be EVERYWHERE … on the walls, on the counter, and even in the air. The interior of the restaurant is greasy as shit. I once had a $ 15 order from here feed me for 5 meals (divided into small to medium portions), over a period of maybe 2 days. The food is admittedly greasy (hey the restaurant has «Fish & Chips» in its name, what do you expect?), but if you have a high tolerance for that sort of thing and love fried seafood, this place is just the ticket for you! I like the fish, shrimp, coleslaw (not the best I’ve ever had, but it still satisfies), tartar sauce (best ever, worth the extra fee), cocktail sauce, and in particular, onion rings.

The food is inexpensive for the quality, taste, and portions that you get (all 3 are solid). I’ve been eating here for over a decade, and plan to continue eating here as long as they stay open.
